The idea of constituting the ASHRAE Mumbai Chapter rose out of the need to effectively administer the operation of chapters. In the years 2008-09 it was felt that as a result of an increase in the number of members and the vastness of the ambit of ASHRAE Western India chapter(which was formed in 1996 and consisted of Maharashtra, Gujarat and Goa), there was scope for it to be split into more manageable entities. Members from ASHRAE Western India chapter who stayed/worked in Mumbai and its surrounding areas opted to be part of the new chapter. Large part of this initiative to obtain the signatures on the petition for forming the Mumbai chapter was by the then ASHRAE WI President MrManojKhati and the SRC MrSudhir Sinha. As a result ASHRAE Mumbai came into existence along with ASHRAE Pune. Members from Goa chose to remain with Mumbai.
